Your Private Walking Tour...
Sydney’s oldest planned suburb which stands on the head of Woolloomooloo Bay on the eastern side of the Domain, has lots to offer the interested visitor.
As we descend along the ancient creek bed of the Yurong Valley, you will discover Sydney’s original landscape and historic areas that tell us much about the development of Sydney and Australia.
A site of aboriginal heritage, long after first contact, Woolloomooloo, originally called Walla-mulla (meaning young kangaroo), saw the commencement of Australian agriculture (Woolloomooloo Farm), convict gardens, aboriginal camps, gentrified housing, and bohemian and eccentric residents including Sydney’s answer to Socrates, William James Chidley.
Woolloomooloo, including the precinct of St Mary’s Cathedral, has been the land of saints and sinners, film stars, criminals and bishops since its inception.
It has survived many attempts to destroy it, and has even emerged as a survivor of the intrusion of the Eastern Suburbs Railway and Sydney’s major traffic arteries.
Walking Gives You The Best Perspective
We will visit the site where Sydney’s two major crime gangs of the 1920s depression era butted heads in a spectacular shootout. Both gangs were led by prominent and violent women, who had established themselves as crime bosses, controlling Sydney’s flourishing illegal gambling, drinking and prostitution industry.
The Juanita Nielson Community Centre is a pleasant stopover and reminder that Juanita’s murder has never been officially solved. Her story is inspiring and much of the preservation of Woolloomooloo and Kings Cross is due to her heroic efforts to defend the rights of working class people against corrupt developers.
“The Loo” remains unique, under-developed, friendly, a refuge for many of Sydney’s homeless, and original Victorian terraces.
From the hills of Surry Hills to the finger wharf of Woolloomooloo Bay, there is no better worked example of a community ranging from the bottom to the top strata of Sydney society than Woolloomooloo.

Strolling through, we will also have a chance to enjoy some of the numerous coffee shops and heritage hotels and Harry’s Café de Wheels, with its unique Australian fast food.
We finish the tour with an up front view of Australia’s working navy dockyard, complete with overseas naval ships of all shapes and sizes, as we enjoy a cool drink on the heritage Finger Wharf.
